This is what HM Revenue and Customs say...
"We make sure that the money is available to fund the UK’s public services by collecting
taxes and duties as laid down by Parliament. We help families and individuals with targeted
financial support.
We want to give you a service that is even-handed, accurate and based on mutual trust and
respect. We also want to make it as easy as we can for you to get things right.

Taxman's Record Keeping Toolkit
contd
Now that the Taxman has published a guide on records to be kept, it's full steam ahead with the penalties that will be charged for not keeping 'adequate' records. The maximum fine is £3,000 and with some 50,000 extra random enquiries being planned its a nice little earner for GB PLC.

Tip: Make sure you take a look at the tool. If you are investigated and can demonstrate that you followed it's advice, it will make it difficult for the taxman to justify imposing a fine.
